There’s a new goldfish food in town, and it’s all the rage among goldfish hobbyists: Repashy Super Gold gel food! What is it?
For a long time, Repashy Soilent Green was probably the most popular brand of gel food for goldfish available. It was decent food, though not specifically made for goldfish.
Then Ken Fischer of Dandy Orandas and Allen Repashy collaborated to create a recipe that takes into consideration the nutritional requirements of goldfish. The result was Super Gold, a moist food with a tailored ingredient profile.
The question is, is it good food? How do you make it? And lastly – where do you find it? Today I’m going to answer all these questions in this post, so stay tuned!
Our Review of Repashy Super Gold Gel Food
I’ve personally used this food for almost a year now for my goldfish (at the time of writing this) and feel I am qualified to give it an honest review based on my experience.

Five stars all the way! I rate Repashy Super Gold gel food as the best food for goldfish on the market and have been very more pleased with its use for my own goldfish than any other food I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a LOT of brands!).
The higher price tag is justified by the better quality of food you get, and better quality food equates to healthier goldfish. Trust me. It is VERY difficult to find a good brand of food for your fish.
Especially one that doesn’t cause so many swim bladder troubles for our poor delicate fancy goldfish with shorter body shapes. The Super Gold formula is truly a groundbreaking food, as it has only been released recently to hobbyists, and the feedback has been just phenomenal.
For me, the prep time is not a big deal at all, especially since it is only required once a week. This is far quicker than doing a water change and well worth the little bit of extra effort to give your fish the best of the best.
Where to Buy Repashy Super Gold Gel Food?
Currently, this isn’t something available at your nearby chain pet store. But don’t worry, you can buy it on Amazon. They also have it available in very large sizes for those with big tanks or ponds with lots of fish to feed.
How to Prepare Super Gold?
Making this gel food is actually surprisingly easy. It comes as a powder. This powder is used in a 3 to 1 ratio (3 parts water to 1 part gel food). The whole process takes about 5-10 minutes.
Some people microwave the water, but I recommend the stove-top method in a small pot (personally not thrilled with microwaved water). I’ve been asked before if it is necessary to dechlorinate the water you will use before preparing Super Gold.
Some people use tap water and don’t do that, and it doesn’t seem to be a huge deal one way or another. Personally, I just use filtered water.
Okay, so let’s get to it!
Instructions:
- Measure out 3 parts water and bring to a boil on the stove. This means if you use 1 teaspoon of gel food powder, you need to use 3 teaspoons of water.
- While the water heats, measure out 1 part gel food powder.
- Once the water is hot (I wait until it is simmering, as higher heat destroys more enzymes), add the gel food powder and whisk to combine.
- Scrape out the mixture into your container of choice to set the gel. Some people use fun molds like the kind used for making candy. I usually just use a small bowl.
- (Optional) cut the gel food up into bite-size pieces for your fish
- Store according to your preference (i.e. fridge, freezer, dried).
The final product (once cooled) is a firm, jelly-like consistency that easily tears apart with your fingers. You can dry it out to make a “jerky” in a dehydrator.
You can also let it air dry in the fridge with no lid, and it will get quite hard. The advantage of this is you don’t have to store it in the fridge once it is dried out. It is recommended to break it apart first before you let it dry out like that, or it gets very difficult to smash up.
You can cover and refrigerate it, and it will keep for up to a week. You can also freeze it in a Ziploc bag if you want it to last a really long time. Instead of using regular water, you can infuse this food with garlic tonic water for extra immune system support benefits.
Keep in mind that you don’t want to make more than a week’s supply of food if you are planning to refrigerate it.
Is Super Gold a Gel Food Only Made for Fancy Goldfish?
No, Repashy Super Gold is great for fancy goldfish and slim-bodied breeds (such as Commons, Comets etc.) alike. That’s because their nutritional requirements are the same, though they may look very different.
Slim-bodied fish aren’t exempt from swim bladder problems either (though admittedly they are less common for them). But regardless, if you want your fish to live as long and healthy of a life as possible, you will want to provide them with the best food and nutrition possible to help you achieve that goal.
Many goldfish owners find that this is the perfect food for their slim-bodied fish and that their fish really love it!
